Turkeys were introduced to Europe from the Americas in the 16th Century and have become synonymous with Christmas. Since they were introduced into Britain the popularity of turkey has soared, with over 33 million birds eaten in the UK every year and a third of those are eaten during the Christmas period.
GOBBLE GOBBLE!
Only the male turkeys, or stags, gobble and on a still day this sound can be heard up to a mile away. In contrast the female birds, or hens, make different sounds, including a clicking noise.
A HANDSOME BIRD?
Ever wondered what the fleshy red skin round a turkey’s neck is called? Well – it’s called caruncles. Male turkeys also have a long fleshy appendage dangling from their forehead over their beak called a snood. When a stag is feeling particularly amorous the caruncles and snood become a very bright red, or blue, making them even more attractive to the hen.
TURKEY SENSES
Although they don’t have obvious ears, turkeys do have excellent hearing. They also see in colour and have good eyesight, but their night vision is poor. Their sense of taste is much more sensitive than their sense of smell. Domestic turkeys generally can’t fly, but wild turkeys can reach up to 55mph for short distances.
HEALTHY EATING
The great news is that turkey is very low in fat, at only 1g per oz of skinless flesh and is also low in calories at just 140 per 100g. It’s also a good source of all B vitamins, as well as potassium, phosphorus & zinc. And if that’s not enough – turkey is also good for women trying to get pregnant, as 100g will provide almost 50% of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid.
